Second Chair · For founders

Your deals close without you in the room.

For B2B SaaS founders who've hired a first AE and still take most technical calls themselves.

  • Deals wait on your calendar for a technical answer
  • Your AE books the meeting, then hands it to you
  • Security reviews and RFPs land on your desk at night

Coaching · For SEs

Get into presales. Then get good at it.

Dean
Meet Dean

I didn't start in tech. That's the point.

My first technical job was training 300+ police and investigators on case analysis software. Explaining complex tools to people with no patience for jargon is still the skill I use most.

That's why I coach both sides. Founders need someone who can run the technical call. SEs need someone who has been the career changer.

The path
  • Uncharted Software · trained 300+ law enforcement users on investigative software
  • TELUS · business analyst, contact centre and IVR redesign
  • CGI · first presales hire for a SaaS product. Built the demo method, discovery framework and RFP process
  • Upland Software · 5 years leading solution consulting. $12.4M recurring revenue contributed, built a team of SCs
  • Petal Health, Flipp · healthcare presales, then technical lead for enterprise retail partners
  • Second Chair · fractional SE for founders, and coaching for SEs
From the field

Real deals behind the method.

Client names are kept private.

Stalled deal

Good demo. Then silence.

What happened: at a global manufacturer, the technical eval went well and then stopped. I asked for a direct talk with the economic buyer. The worry was change inside their company, not the product.

Moved to contract within 3 weeks of naming the real concern.

Their data, not a demo script

Five buying groups, one decision.

What happened: for a large US municipality, I ran discovery across five groups, built an ROI model on their budget lines and demoed with their own data.

Closed at $1.3M TCV, the largest government deal that year.

Cold deal

Ten months cold, then closed.

What happened: the champion had left. I found a new contact, ran discovery from scratch, and rebuilt the business case around what they cared about now.

A cold deal needs a new way in, not another follow-up.

The one I lost

Won the demo. Lost the deal.

What happened: a large transportation deal looked strong. I checked technical fit but never confirmed who owned the budget. It ended in no decision.

I haven't skipped the budget question since. Neither will your team.

Questions

What people ask first.

Will you really get on calls with my prospects?

Yes, once we agree on it. I learn your product and shadow your calls first, and you watch my first few before I run any alone.

What happens when we hire a full-time SE?

That's the plan. I help write the job description, sit in on interviews if you want, and hand over the discovery guide, demo flow and call notes.

How much does it cost?

Every engagement is scoped on the intro call, and you get a fixed quote before anything starts. Coaching applicants get pricing by email.

Can coaching guarantee me a job?

No, and be careful of anyone who says it can. What I can do is make you a stronger candidate: clearer positioning, better interviews, and a demo you're proud of.

Do I need a technical degree to become an SE?

No. I have a criminology degree. What matters is learning the product deeply, asking good questions and explaining things simply.
